My BC895XLT was supposed be obsolete by this time, does anyone know when rebanding will hit the King County and Snohomish area? I think I got my monies worth, i bought it when it first came out, I lived in Seattle and Bought it so I could monitor SFD.

I know that my Dept has been told that we will need new rig radios to support it. Which gives me the impression that the groundwork is being laid.

Maybe one of the King Co. radio guys can pipe in and give us some info :roll:

Re-banding is in progress now. The first phase is to replace and/or reprogram all mobiles and portables. The replacement part is what is underway. Seattle is about half way thru, with the other agencies on the King County-wide system somewhat behind.

The second phase will be to actually change all the frequencies. Timing of that is very fuzzy, probably one to two years away.

This post ONLY speaks to re-banding. Do not get re-banding confused with 700MHz or P25 (digital) operations.

When it finally happens, everybody in King/Pierce/Snohomish will reband at the same time. If they didn't, they'd interfere with each other. That means the KC trunk, Port of Seattle, Boeing, and whatever systems are in Pierce and Snohomish counties (I don't ever listen to them so I don't know how many each have or what they're called).

I guess I am a little confused. I thought rebanding was going to take care of the major issues for a while. What is happening with 700mhz and P25 operations. What is the time line for all of this to be done?

Wayne, We live in a Fast paced world that moves ever slower and slower. The FCC -- one of many Independent Federal Agencies -- not under control of a Cabinent head -- now wants to take away -- another minimum of 6 TV Channels (Channels 46 to 51) -- and possibly ALL "over the air" TV Spectrum --inclunding new HDTV channels -- so that America can have -- new highspeed -- broadband -- cellphone services. Its all about MONEY. Money from big business. And your local Police or Fire departments that are being pushed into buying NEW types of modern services that may or may not be needed -- all paid by the tax payers. YOU !!. Some NEW types of "uses" can save the lives of First Responders. Every local agency should be able to have use of any such new technology. But what will those new services cost?? When will they be in place?? 911 has been around since 1970 or so. The FCC has mandated that every 911 center will be able to track the exact location of an emergency phone caller. This would save many lives. You and everyone are already paying for such service -- each month on your local telephone bill. But not every 911 PSAP has that service availible as yet. And what about people who use VOIP -- Voice over internet -- as a local phone. How can they be located in an emergency ?? It all takes time.

Re-banding- Moving all public safety licensees (both NPSPAC and lower 800MHz frequencies) to the lower end of the 800 band, which starts at 806MHz. This moves the public safety users that use noise limited architecture away from the ESMR (IE Nextel) users that use interference limited architecture. This is to help mitigate the existing interference to the public safety systems.

P25- A digital modulation scheme used in both conventional and trunking systems. P25 phase 2 will allow twice as many conversations per frequency. P25is also called Common Air Interface (CAI) and moves us away from proprietary (IE must use the trunking system vendors subscriber radios) trunking systems to systems that will use the P25 CAI standard. This will not happen overnite, but will happen over the next few years. P25 is not tied to one band. IE it will work in the 150, 450, 700, and 800 bands. This is not to say every radio will work in every band, but that P25 itself is not band specific.

700MHz- This is a new band of frequencies carved out ov some broadcast TV channels. The 700MHz band requires the use of P25 modulation. Most new radios in the 800 band are also capable of working in the 700 band and most 700 radios can also operate in the 800 band. Most new trunking systems will be able to mix 700 and 800 frequencies on the same site, as well as support 150 and 450 sites.

Narrow-banding- This is the process of moving all radio systems (except for paging only frequencies) in the "150" and "450" bands to narrower modulation. This will allow twice as many channels in these bands.

All of these things are somewhat different and are essentially happening at the same time. And that is what is keeping your friendly neighborhood radio technician busy these days.

Wow, that is the most comprehensive explanation I've ever heard. Our department recently had it's rebanding inventory done, so that "they" know what types of equipment we have (and will need).

Any guess if our current countywide system will be replaced in the future? I had heard that there was some planning already.

What year do you retire? There is currently a consultant on board for the tri county region, and some state agencies to assess what we have, and where we should be, as well as how to govern and fund it.

?? I thought this was already done.. I just replaced my last analog TV with a HD tuner TV and got my new digital antenna up. it took about 20 min. Didnt you get the goverment rebate for this project?
