Poking around in ULS I found a few interesting licenses. I looked at Children's Hospital: they've got three UHF repeaters (KNNP631, KNNM968, WNYD435) and VHF Simplex (KZD639). What's really cool is that they've got two trunked systems: VHF (WPXJ700) and UHF (WPXL296). They've also got a license for HEAR.

I took the bus out there earlier today, because that's how I get everywhere. Put on close call DND and scanned every freqeuncy from the above licenses. I arrived just outside the giraffe parking garage and was dissappointed that there were no giraffes being parked. Went inside looking for a good place to sit, got lost, saw a bunch of scary equipment, ended up outside again. Not a peep the entire time from either scanner. Walked down to the employee garage and sat on the level below the roof since scanners don't like rain. Still nothing. Grabbed an umbrella out of a bucket and went to the roof. I could see most of the hospital, and still got nothing. A few spurs on one frequency, but otherwise silent. One of the frequencies is shared with the high powered Renton School District transportation. At first I thought that might be a channel for the Children's shuttles, but it came in with DPL 346 and that frequency was on the trunked license. Also, none of the Children's busses have antennas on them; they must be in Nexthell.


Anyone else tried scanning at Children's?

Childrens has tried to put an LTR system together for several years. Apparently they were having difficulty obtaining even one UHF freq at an FB8 level.

For those who don't know, FB8 means you basically "own" the freq within the licensed contours. No co-channel users. VERY HARD to find in large urban areas, but I don't think it is impossible.

LTR Home Channels really need FB8, as any co-channel interference on the Home Channel can really hose things up. Also, an LTR Home Channel keys every 10 seconds to put out an "idle message" and that would cause interference with co-channel users.

I have to say I am a little confused that they had no activity at all on their licensed freqs. I know they have alot of radio there, a good friend of mine works there. I'll try to get ahold of him to ascertain current status of their systems.

I was outside most of the time. Inside had too many screaming kids and scary medical equipment.. Emergency medicine, the kind that paramedics perform--I can do. But I hate hospitals.
There was also a lack of secluded places to sit, and the layout of Children's makes the Gaylord Opryland look like a studio apartment.

Last time I was in I had nothing but HOT nurses (3rd times a charm?), so I'm not so down on the hospital thing.

I have to say they thought I was a little wierd (I am) for having a couple handhelds in my room. They never told me I couldn't use them, but DON'T USE A CELL PHONE!! WOW that irks 'em.

Allegedly interferes with "medical equipment".
(I was in the spine unit, not Cardiac...)

All I had was those machines that pump medicine.
(Never could get that Morphine drip to put out more...)

As of last year Children's used a couple link repeaters to cover structurally dense areas of the hospital. They also use several radio call boxes. Those channels typically don't get much traffic and could account for the lack of activity? For general security communications they use UHF conventional.

The emergency call boxes? I saw quite a few of those. And more cameras than a Walmart. Since the call boxes were near the cameras, I figured they'd share a conduit, but that was just speculation.

A fine example: Muckleshoot casino got their FB8 for a whole 1W ERP. Works fairly well actually.

They have over 500 users and they wanted MDC-1200 ANI and no DoS (mutes the data bursts).... gawd that got annoying quick....

They use the call boxes for gate and door access and verify with the cameras. It's actually a box that has a portable iCOM radio inside. A small controller card keeps the radio unmuted for a period of time after each press of the talk button on the box. 1st press sends an alert tone.
