Anybody have any idea's as to the users of this frequency? I heard it today for the first time. Voice encryption is being used so nothing can be deciphered. It is loud and clear here in Victoria, BC.

Occasionally a tone of 88.5 shows up.

Doesn't seem like any of those BC licensees would be using encryption

It was definitely on 155.9500, not 155.9550. I made sure to check on that. The signal came in clearer on 155.9500 than 155.9550.
It was 2 people talking back and forth for almost an hour. I'm wondering if it was some fishing vessels off the coast. They are often found in the 155mhz range, and wherever they were they were within a couple of miles of me, because the signal was extremely strong.

One of those mysteries, I guess.

Most likely -- Snoqualmie PD -- WPXN-230 with a 100 watt repeater and ERP of 250 watts from Rattlesnake Mtn +4,000' on 155.9475 R. Someone must be able to hear them.

I was thinking that as well, but it definitely sounded like simplex, not running through a repeater. One of the signals sounded like it was right outside my house, as it was full bars while the other fluctuated between one and three bars. I live right off the coast, so I am going to stick with my theory of it being some fishing vessels, using some sort of voice scramble so others don't hear where the good catch is?

If i was thinking I would have hit record to play it back.

Doing a little research on the internet I found 155.9500 listed as a channel 138 for the Furuno FM-8800 Marine Radiophone. This is an expensive marine radio used by many large international freighters. Otherwise, not much else on 155.9500 worldwide.

If anybody is interested

"155.9500 listed as a channel 138 for the Furuno FM-8800 Marine Radiophone"

Very interesting. That was probably what you were hearing.
I can imagine there are a lot of radios on ships from other countries
that come into Vancouver that have some strange frequencies in them.

Most other countries have very different band plans than we do in the US and Canada.
Very good detective work Cory. Thanks for sharing that info.
