Hey guys, just wanted to pass along a good word for Dave Marcinko over at Day Wireless in SeaTac. He did a great job on my antennas and mounting my Icom VHF and Uniden scanner. I'll have to post a few pics to the group, but it looks *very* clean and well-done. He makes it look SOOO easy! ;)

If you need any work done, he's the man to see.

Someone told me that Spectrum Communications was a good shop -- I cant' remember who told me. But even if it's along way to go -- it might be worth the drive over to Moses Lake. Any good toppless bars in Moses Lake ??

Guys, I'm not going to tell you what the cost was, but if you really want to know, then you can call Dave and he'll gladly provide a quote. :D
Suffice it to say, I supplied 95% of the parts and Dave did the work himself.

I love a good drive, but if you factor in at lost time at work and gas - it all adds up.

MTM, I had 2 (NMO) mounts drilled/installed, power, cabling and the VHF/Scanner mounted which required a little metal work.

Marcinko has been in the field a long time. I didnt know he was working for Day...

He has a number of Amateur repeaters on the air.

He has probably drilled as many holes in cars as I have... :D

I used to setup cars with seven antennas per unit. Im down to five in some two in others... I get enough of these holes Im gonna weld em all together and have me a new car... :mrgreen:

Dave does not have any Amature repeaters on the air, I think you may be thinking of his dad.

Slightly off topic, but, are there any limitations in installing roof-top antennas on modern cars?

I have installed many a roof-top antenna in my day, but looking at a modern car scares me. Can you still get the headliner off and back on again without doing damage? How about the airbags? Aren't some of these in the side panels and even the roof nowdays?

I'm shopping for a new car soon and am dreading having to reinstall my radios. New cars seem to have fewer places to install radios and seem much more difficult to run cable in. Thinking about having it professionally done this time around, although back in the day, I was the guy that did this kind of work for others. Maybe a trip to Moses Lake is in order...

The newer cars are fun! :roll:

The curtain airbags on some are almost impossible to get around and no issue on others.

Newer headliners are a tad easier to snake through than the older models. Even the Crown Vics are easier now than they used to be due to filler panels between the headliner and the roof.

What about putting a 40W mobile in a hybrid like a Prius. Any complications there?

Your mileage may vary on a Prius. Seriously, I went to bracket mounts above the two fenders on my Subaru and was surprised at the reception, not as good as the earlier center roof mount install on my truck which I still have, but doable considering the Forester has a 3' sunroof, that with it's retraction, eliminates most of the roof as a ground plane. I ran LMR-200 and soldiered the connectors and with the 2055 hooked up to a 800mhz 5/8 and the Icom to a VHF Maxrad 5/8 it still does a good job. I need one more antenna somewhere....

I've read with the Prius it gets tricky if you want to do HF mobile in your car, but it can be done. Basically you have to put a choke on most of the power lines in the car to keep RFI to little as possible.

But for VHF/UHF, my understanding is that Toyota has some sort of literature about doing "two-way radio/cellular" installs in the Prius if you want something specific.
