I pulled out my phone today while at a red light (S 320th ST & 23rd AVE S) to make a quick voice memo. I got a notification of an available access point: "KingCountyMetro [Unsecured]. I'm still not sure if it came from the Transit Center or the bus directly next to me, and I barely had time to connect to it. So I went looking on the county website, and there's a three old article about starting WiFi on the 48 and the 197. Considering the time and place, it may have been the 197 next to me. The article reveals that the busses are using the Junxion box. Pop a modem in, and instant WiFi hotspot. While continuing to dig through the county website for something a bit newer, I found this: rtsp://media01.metrokc.gov:554/video/ex ... ilotPro.rm Here's what I learned: - Minimum age for a transit cop is 60 - They drive the British Crown Vics with the no steering wheel package - Speak very slowly to the dispatcher - A car prowler will generally linger around one car for three or more minutes - Walk very slowly as to not startle the prowler - Dispatchers only work on one call at a time, and get to watch the call from a live IP cam - Be as grumpy on the bus as you want; nobody will take action--they'll just ignore you. - Some busses have cameras. Now Sean can upload video of me picking my nose on the bus. At least they didn't whip out the green screen on this one. |

MTM, believe me that age will come before you realize it and AARP will find you before you even remember you are approaching 50. The amount of mail you receive will increase significantly. Gramps (who is old enough for AARP and to be a transit cop, but isn't) |

I've used the Wifi on the Metro buses; its pretty neat. Tri-Met down here has Cameras on some buses and all of light rail. I always wondered if the train operator can see them or does someone watch them at master control and if so, how are they sent back. |

I saw a story a few months ago, I think it was on NWCN; apparently a goat was on one of their busses headed back to base. They showed video of the rear of the bus with a goat walking around. My guess is that due to the sheer amount of video it's stored and only reviewed if needed. Edit: I remembered it a bit wrong. On a somewhat related note; Wa DoT is pulling the plug on rest area WiFi. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/safety/restareas/wifi.htm I tried it one time at Ryegrass. They (the ISP) wanted to charge more than Starbucks for anything outside the Dot website. |

I don't know how many of you have had to review video, but it is VERY time consuming. There are some pretty good (and currently very expensive) software tools that can assist in certain applications. Abandoned object detection, crowd counts, wrong way detection, and license plate readers are a few of these tools. However, if you are looking for random "bad behavior", it is extremely time consuming and cumbersome to actually weed those activities out of "normal" activities. As the camera count increases, so does the workload. |
