All I know is what's in the pictures. Tons of Metro vehicles when I rolled by Southbound; also one of the South King Fire vehicles; I'm assuming that'd be Engine 64. A little bit later I went back north, and snapped these while moving 60+. The bus is on the 317th carpool only offramp, the bus was heading southbound, probably to the Federal Way Transit Center.

First picture isn't perfect, I miscalculated the lag time. And the second one has the wrist strap on the bottom for those wondering what that is :)

Looks like everyone's got this story:

The inital response was South King Engine 66, Kent Engine 73 and South King Battalion 61. Engine 66 and 73 entered southbound I-5 from S 272nd St. and Battalion 61 entered northbound from SR-18.

Engine 64 and Aid 64 responded via the S.317th off ramp from southbound I-5 but were told to stand by at S 317th St. and I-5 on the overpass.

Battalion 61 established I-5 command and disbanded command some 4.5 hours later to Engine 66.

Metro stated that the bus was one of there hybrid models worth $500K................................

The tire blew out; doesn't really matter how it's powered.

I agree with A.T. that the tire blowing caused the fire but fighting a fire on a hybrib is dangerous as you never know when the batteries are going to explode.

Yesterday just seemed to be the day for vehicles fires on I-5 as Seattle responded to a couple in the downtown area.

I would imagine that hybrid fire left one heck of a "carbon footprint".

so fire caused by tire? let me think out loud...

that dont happen very often that tire would have to heat up to flash point and then burst into flame.

I assume they have a genset attached on the axel somehow,

or

was it not the friction and resistance on the genset, that caused the electrical to fry and incarnate the bus. but we don't want to publish that a earth friendly bus is very dangerous.

just thinking...

I am a real fan of electric cars, etc...
- BUT -
Widespread use of electric / hybrids = many many craploads of batteries to deal with.

Explosions are one hazard, but all that battery acid is another real, and huge hazard.

I imagine the response to a collision will need to include significant spill cleanup capabilities.
