Hey Matt, you wouldn't be interested, it's Chris Parris' report on the regional 380mhz DOD trunked system we were discussing the other day.

USN site 101 is still a puzzle.

I have to agree with Chris that it isn't at Ft Lewis now; in fact on Saturday I don't think it was anywhere. I was driving all sorts of places, and not a peep, and no alternate found searching the band. Yesterday I was in the hills hiking, also nothing found. Yet this morning it's back, solid enough to use the attenuator.

I also discovered that 385.0625 is also a wonderful intermod product - strong enough at times to generate Close Call hits. Got those and the signal stayed up long enough to listen and confirm intermod cutting in & out (sounded like a control channel and maybe digital voice, wouldn't decode). Given that, I'd treat any S-meter readings with suspicion unless the attenuator is ON.

I had no problem listening to it Saturday afternoon, between 1300-1630, from the area near McChord AFB. The east fill site was a little lower level than normal, but that's about it.

FYI the USN stuff, my Ramsey DDF1 (Doppler Direction Finder Kit) is in the mail as we speak, so I'll take a weekend and fox hunt all this stuff soon enough.

Clarification: I heard Army 101 (380ish) but not Navy 101 (385.0625).

Let us know how the Doppler works... I've been tempted myself.

in reference to the "things that fall out"

the mag is i would assume distribution in the xx,xxx and not owned by a major publisher thusly they dont have major marketing campaign for higher distribution.

It's going to be awhile, Flash. I got it today and am pretty intimidated by the kit. I don't even have a soldering iron...

Learning is half the fun, but what's the other half?
