When I started scanning in 1989 there were 35 different fire departments in Pierce County. Now almost 20 years later there are only 25 different fire departments and the number is most likely only going to get smaller. Nick |

It would be interesting to see the same comparison for King County. Does anyone know of any pending, or at least even talked about mergers in Washington State? |

There have probably been 20 or more mergers/annexations/contracts in King County in the last 20-30 years. What's also interesting to think about is how many dispatch centers there were for fire 20 years ago in King County and how many there are now. 1988 Fire Control (Bellevue) Control 10 (Dist. 10) Dist. 11 South Com (Federal Way) Dist. 24 (SeaTac) Mercer Island Seattle ValleyCom Enumclaw Vashon Island City of Issaquah I think Fall City and possibly Des Moines dispatched for themselves up until the late 80's too. now Seattle ValleyCom Bellevue (soon to be Norcom) Enumclaw |

Just think about all of the areas or counties that have only ONE 911 PSAP - dispatch center. Most areas still have multiple fire districts. There is NOTHING to prevent incorporation into one single countywide -- or areawide Fire / EMS District or Department or Agency / Authority. This also applys to all other types of government services like Water, PUD or School districts. Maybe a "region-wide transit district". Lots of rural counties have only one single dispatch center. The wave of the future. |

I did training with some folks from Iceland. They have one 911 center for the entire country, one medical director, one set of protocols... Sure, it's not a huge population, but they're spread across a large area with lots of responding agencies. (Yes, the building has multiple independent sets of communications gear and connections!) |

Make a small change: City of Dupont Contracts with PCFD #2 And there are some other wrinklings that should happen pretty soon, even some "contract cancelling" |
