When monitoring Seattle Fire Department calls I frequently hear something that sounds like "syncable" used to describe patients. WTF? Have I got the word right?

Syncope = fainting

Ahhhhhh! Now it all makes sense! So what is the phrase that they are likely using? It sounds like "Male, 55, syncable." Is it actually "syncope" something?

I already knew that RLC meant Reduced Level of Consciousness, which I guess is somewhat different than fainting. (LOC?)

I've also heard something about a "scale" of consciousness. Can anyone explain what the various levels are?

Usually they dispatch to a 'syncopal episode', meaning somebody passed out.

Level of consciousness (AVPU scale) = Unresponsive, Pain responsive, Verbal responsive, Awake(alert)
Anything but "A" is D(ecreased)LOC and rates a medic unit.

Mental Status (for an Awake LOC): awareness of Who, When, Where, What.
Some curriculums count only 3 states, others 4, so often you'll hear "Awake, 3 out of 4" or such so the person on the other end doesn't mistake the meaning.

Thanks for bringing this up. :D I've always wondered the same thing, and now I know. 8)

Another "scale" you will frequently hear on the scanner is GCS or Glasgow Coma Scale.

Thank you both, FlashP and Kerwin!

Kerwin - That was indeed another thing that I was going to ask about. I've heard "Glasgow" scale mentioned a few times. I'm going to print this entire thread out and keep it under the scanner for frequent referral.

As a "Thank You" I'd like to share with you our latest Ballard bumperstickers:

Thanks silverone! :D I'm glad you liked them! Its a good idea to do, as long as you choose carefully what recording to post. I'd like someone to do recordings of the seattle police and fire if they can, maybe call it seattlescan or something. :roll: I have a hard time reaching seattle from here in Gig Harbor. :(
Thanks -Louie-
