I was Monitoring Ephrata WSP 155.505 This evening When I Heard Dispatch call (ephrata OCEAN 99) Who or what is OCEAN 99 ??, I Have Never Heard of a WSP Call sign like this, :? 8)

Any WSP unit with Ocean in front of it is off-duty. Commonly heard when calling in service working an overtime detail or calling back in the car after clearing the gym after going out of service, etc...

Ocean 99 was not the entire conversation ... Ocean 998 would be the unit that was not in service, but in the car. We have no other "99x" trooper stationed here in Moses Lake.

It may be some dude (Troop) just driving down I-90, telling Ephrata he's cruiz'in through. On that note, while visiting Riverside State Park, Nine troops came cruizing in. My guess is a squad meeting??? They only stayed about 15 minutes.

It could be a new tv show, based on the mean streets of Ephrata

Ocean 99!

I've been hearing (I know we're not supposed to talk about stuff we hear) a fair share of pursuits lately around Spokane County. Heard one the other night where the Ford 'Escape' (really) ditched a couple of Crown Vics. Snow on streets + 4x4 = Crown Vics in ditch.
Umm... "Terminate" may be a good word to use to save the embarrassment.

Speaking of WSP...

I've gathered that license plates match badge numbers (or at least they seem to), but what are the five-digit numbers that the troopers call in at the start of their shifts? Here in the Bremerton area I typically hear "### in service" followed by a number in the low 10,000s or 11,000s. At first I thought it was mileage but it doesn't seem to change much, if at all?

Its their unique identifier. Example, 990 became 290 when he became a Sgt. 990 will then be recycled and used by someone else. This way the patrol can track the individual using their unique identifier, for performance evals, complaints or whatever.

I'm hearing the use of Ocean as a designator more often in Snohomish County. The first mention was when the Sheriff's Office changed the designator for the deputy who covers the Forest Service area out of Granite Falls. He was 2Frank15 (pronounced one-five instead of fifteen) but now is called Ocean 30. He said it was because the sheriff's office changed some designators from some folks hired from the LA PD or LA County Sheriff's office. But he didn't know what their thinking was in using Ocean.

I've been hearing on Everett PD, however, more usage of designators of OPD1131 and the same OPD with other numbers. There, I'm thinking it might mean OffDuty Police officer with a handheld and the number is his badge number.
