Heard 2 troopers here in Moses Lake using this channel for random chat yesterday. The channel was CSQ. As I uderstand it, this channel is listed on FCC database as base station only. Has anyone else around the state programmed this channel in?? Have you heard any traffic on there?? Brian J. Preston Moses Lake, WA |

I did not hear them refer to the channel as such. I was almost floored when I FINALLY heard some traffic on there. It was a little spotty, so took the scanner (RS Pro-2067) out of scan so I could hear all the traffic. The freq is running CSQ. Ah ... the things we hear when we least expect them! Brian J. Post subject: | That's ISB-1 you heard... |
161.610 is referred to as ISB-1. It is indeed a 'chat' channel used to facilitate communication between different agencies (I think the full name is 'Inter-Service Bureaus 1'). I've been called upon to program it into a number of trooper portables for special details and such. Other than that, I know very little about it. I do know that you're not likely to hear anything more than 'local' traffic (within a couple of miles of the transmit point). Keep the peace(es). |

I think what I heard was railroad security. We have several trains that run through the area and 161.610 is a railroad frequency. Sorry for any confusion! Brian |

Yes -- 161.61 is a WSP --- Portable Base channel -- with no mobiles. But lots of Railroad police still use the old channels: 161.58, 161.595 and 161.61. I can hear marine stations on the Washington coast -- on 161.60 once in a while. Most likely you heard a Railroad Police / Special Agent talking on a portable. In fact both the UP (KA-2337) and the BNSF (WPSF-971) are licensed and use 161.61 -- mobiles only -- nationwide. The WSP licensed 161.61 to replace the "White Pass repeater" on 159.75 -- (KOH-777) and the statewide portable emergency base station on 159.75 (KOI-731) that expired 30 years ago. |
