A-5 should be 'TALKPD', a fully DES car-to-car channel.

Guys, there is no problem here. Tac-3 handles digital traffic, i.e. P25. It is NOT encrypted; with a digital scanner it is perfectly clear.

When you hear "buzzbuzzbuzzbuzzbuzzbuzz..." on 45072, a person with a digital radio (like the PSR500) hears "Puyallup, Engine 3 responding".

Just heard a dispatch on 464 in analog, response on 45072 in digital, crystal clear.

Thank you, I was unaware or not used to hearing mixed use digital/analog on the same system. Was aware that the Tacoma/Puyallup system has encyptyed channels that I dont see or hear. I am using a pro 97 and a pro 163. Guess it's time for me to step up to some digital gear.

Any recommendations on equipment. Are the PSR 500 and PSR 600 the only choices in the GRE Lineup. How about Uniden. how about the pro 96 or the pro 2096

The Pro-96/2096 are actually made by GRE, but branded as Radio Shack units. Uniden has the BCD396T/BCD996T and the upcoming BCD396XT. The 396 is a pretty popular handheld; I'd say roughly half of the members at the membership meeting had one. I'm not sure if any of the other scanner makers (AOR, etc.) have digital scanners.

Get a BC396T. It's the single best handheld scanner I've ever seen. Gigantic capabilities, and the Puyallup digital stuff comes in fine.

Radio Shack said to be coming out with a GRE clone to the 500/600 later on this quarter, the Pro 106 and 197.

Does anyone know when the BCD396XT is coming out to the market?

Sometime around Christmas or New Year's; possibly a little bit after that.

Recommendations for lousy scanners aside, what was that tall slim radio being passed around, an MBITR?

I have been spoiled using my win 97 software to program my pro 97/pro 163, so I will probally stick with the Radio Shack units. Any good/bad about these units ?

Thanks guys

I think it was a Racal.

I didn't see any MBITRs there.
I have never seen a "small" MBITR.

The 97/163 won't work after the reband, so you'll be stuck using it for everything but the 800 systems. You could upgrade to the 164, which is reband supported. You can still use Win 97 with the 164. Also, none of the RS units are computer controllable.

I meant I will stick with upgrading to a GRE/Radio Shack Digital model. Dont much care for computer control but Enjoy computer programming. Looking to hear any pros/cons on the Pro 96/pro 2096
