Curious, you are almost there..... I logged this talkgroup out of the blue when they were just saying "testing, testing, testing." That was under v2 firmware without tweaking. I haven't picked it up lately on v3 with the one mandatory tweak in the hidden menu to 3. P25 voice is supposed to always be automatically detected when present unless you have something like a 996 with digital/analog only settings. I cannot find the CT/DCS option I referenced earlier in the actual trunk settings of UASD, but I seem to recall that some goofy settings can block P25. If you have v3 firmware try hidden menu setings P25 Adj mode=3 and P25 Adj Level=25.

When listening to 45072 next to the frequency display, "P25" would alternate with "lnk".

Tacoma/Puyallup is a "Moto Type II" system, and my BC396 tracks it just fine until it goes ENC. There's a distinction between digital voice using P25 standards and a full P25 control channel (9600 bd).

I can't think of what those goofy settings would be, but I know with manual programming and with bcTool you can't put CT/DC settings on trunked system channels or talkgroups.

CTCSS / DCS themselves are analog, conventional FM functions only. I am aware of only 2 trunking protocols that may utilize CTCSS on voice channels - Smart Trunk (not Motorola Smart Net) and MPT1327. In both instances, use of tones is an option and not required.

Since CTCS/DCS is not used on a P25 channel, theoretically it does not matter if the scanner allows those functions to be set in a memory channel. It would be smart design to remove user access to those functions when a user selects a P25 mode.

I am curious, do the P25 scanners offer a "mixed mode" option when programming a conventional (non-trunked) memory channel, where analog vs. P25 is automatically selected?

Last month there was a lot of location testing on TG1616 which they called B13 in DuPont.

I had to do a little research on this one... CT/DCS and CT/DCS Searching must not be done on the 396T in conventional mode scanning of P25 per UPMAN. So I don't know what else to say about stopping on the fire tac and not hearing digital voice. I cannot scan the Puyallup trunk from my house in Renton due to KingCo RJC sharing the same channels so the odds of catching the fire dept using this tac are low for me.

I finally got my 866mhz YAGI antenna up and I can now hear the Tacoma system! It's not great but I'm at least able to monitor it. I confirmed that I'm seeing the same P25-specific channels on the Type II system.

Of course, now I realized I want to have like (4) of these antennas for various systems and directions! ;)

B-13 should be Event-1.

They were running all around DuPont jumping between 1616 and 45264(ENC) which they called A5.

Yes, that is Puyallup Fire Tac 3 - Also known as A4. The "A" things are just the location of the talkgroup on their radios. Bank A Channel 4

45072 is Puy Fire Tac 3
1616 is Event 1 per WilRobinson

If you only hear the "control channel" on 868.4 you may have the same problem that I have: what you are hearing is coming from KingCo rather than from Puyallup. It would depend on you location.

Just to clarify for anyone who has info on this. We are listening to Puyallup control channel 868.5750 ,Sys-830D motorola. We are hearing all talkgroup IDs(Puyallup Police,Public works, etc.) We can hear Puyallup Fire dipatching units on talk ID 00464 and instructing responding units to reply on fire tac 3.a few moments later talk group id 45072 comes up and all we can hear is "machine gun" data.
