Has the author considered that buying one of those broadband alternatives would also involve a sole-source contract?

It's so nice when the uninformed, unknowing and anti-everything-government write, isn't it?

At least that's my take on that "article".

Owen Lei just presented some enlightening news. The story isn't yet up on King5's site, so you'll have to trust that I copied this down accurately*

"[WSP spokesman Bob] Calkins says the partnership they're [WSP] looking at allows them to piggyback off an existing federal radio network. He says that because they don't have to build their own they save $12 million dollars. He says this also helps the communications problem--not just the feds but also King, Snohomish and Pierce county and the City of Seattle--they all use the system too."

*I have TiVo, I copied it down correctly

I been running the IWN system for Snohomish and Skagit all day on my PSR-600 and HP-1. I am not getting anything, I am about 4 miles south of Skagit county. been running in open mode with wild cards all day, this system is not active today at all. I had my PSR-500 doing a limit search between 162.000 to 172.000 and dont get anything that is P-25. I will retry next weekend and post what I find.

I ran PRO-96com on the IWN system last night for the hell of it. From 10pm or so until 1pm today the program logged 507 voice transmissions, countless data transmissions, and 6 new or previously unseen radios.

That makes 3299 radios and 315 talkgroups logged in the last year.

Anyone who says the IWN is not active, or is "relatively small", is plain wrong.

Strange. I just ran a search for P25 control channels between 162 & 174 with my PRO-106 with the stock rubber duck ant
from inside my house and come up with at least 5 control channels with full scale signal strength readings. Not to mention some encrypted stuff in between them. They are still definitely there.

Related or not, I have no idea, but Sat Dec 24, 5:00ish, traveling through Chehalis & Kelso areas, the 2 Area dipatches (155.850 & 154.770) were operating in a multi-cast arrangement. I have never heard this in these areas before.
