Noticed something interesting on this system the other day.

I have it in the PSR500 (yes, I know it won't do Phase 2) in wildcard mode. I saw it intermittently stopping on PCSD talkgroups, not passing audio, but instead displaying frequencies used as voice channels just like any other system.

Now the weird part...It was displaying freqs in the VHF range as well as the 700mhz range. I slapped Pro96com awake and verified only 700 freqs were active. Huh, bug in the radio. Then I thought some more. The VHF freqs being displayed were all former PCSD ones, i.e. 154.950, 154.710, 154.890, etc.

WTH?

Interesting. Yeah the radio is just interpreting whatever data is being given to it from the control site. It might be worthwhile to look at the packet dump logs (from Pro96com) to see if there's anything VHF-related.

I'd do it myself but I can't get the Tacoma site from my QTH. The West Seattle site isn't simulcast so I don't hear PCSO full-time.

Can you listen to them using a BCD536HP?

I just spent nearly 2 hours listening to this system via a deputy's radio.

Damn.

In a well-covered spot here in Tacoma, where I (via scanner) can get the Tacoma system 4x5, and I can barely (if at all) receive the control channels for the 700 system, this system sounded phenomenal. Absolutely no distortion or unreadable traffic...the audio is simply outstanding.

It sounds like a crystal-clear analog VHF system, or, for the older crowd, like how AMPS sounded.

I need a phase-2 radio.

In theory the 436/536 should sound very close to the APX radio as they have the same vocoder chip.

Not sure it's worth the $2000 for an APX portable...

I was going to have the system programmed into the new dual-bander that's in the mail.
