Over here (Spokane co) the radios (VHF conv) have been broadcasting a unique ID since the 90's that I can remember.

I don't think 800 would work in eastern pierce because of the terrain features.

A prior news report indicated that the mountain units in PCSO have 25-45min to wait for a second unit. Considering that sparse population density and the weak terrain following characteristics of 800MHz... do they want a site on every other hilltop that would serve a unit once, maybe twice a day? Expensive.

but of COURSE they will end up going with the most expensive, least reliable option because it's what some yahoo salesman has "convinced" them is the best option. Annnnd the taxpayers will be "feared, scared and convinced" into paying into this as they generally are less informed than say some of the people, say for instance people who are in the "hobby" and know a little more than the average "joe" on the street just watching the news. It all comes dowm to politics or at least it will in this case. and in the end the actual issue at hand will wind up being in the same situation. it will be interesting to see how "fast" this gets greenlighted.

Isn't the issue, yes we could improve the VHF with more simulcast or receivers, but with more users on 800, it doesn't make sense to upgrade the VHF, only to tear it back down again? There was a document a few years back, 2007-2008? proposing a Pierce County 800 P25 system posted here.

Someone should make a P25 radio with Auto Tune in it to compliment the crappy vocoder falloff.

Truthfully UHF (450) portables get out better than their VHF counterparts due to the antenna and available ground plane... Even in the sticks... You actually need more VHF receivers than UHF receivers to make the portable talk-in equal. Mobiles are a different story of coarse...

But that in mind-

A few more receivers and some verification that they are not sharing their input frequency with someone else to close, their system could easily be expanded to work for them. Analog VHF using MDC1200..

The tower pictures look to have uhf links so I believe they are voted already... anyone know?

Time to invest in more of these if they have them at all ????.. http://www.3rd-st.com/voting.htm
plus MDC-1200/G-Star RID in the mean time until there is a new system upgrade if or when that happens.

Don't get me wrong. I value office/firefighter safety as much as anyone. Probably moreso that some. Given the timeline between the tragic death of the Deputy and now, an 800mhz digital system appears to be a "knee jerk" reaction. It strikes me that there hasn't been nearly enough time for a comprehensive study to have taken place. It also seems to me to be a poor time to ask the voters for millions of dollars given the state of the economy, unemployment, etc.

I remember reading about the number of "extra" repeaters Metro transit had to install to insure coverage on all of its routes. I can't imagine would they would have to do in rural Pierce County.

All things said, officer/firefighter safety has to have priority.
