Once. Since a ton of them carry cell phones, I doubt many of them use it much. And they've got Admin channels to talk to each other too. I also don't know how easy it is to use; I don't know if they can scroll through a list and select "Officer Smith" or if they have to enter 737219.

yea - its not that common for radio programming on officer radio by default a new radio isnt delivered with all the units in the department - I also dont know of any radios with manual entry that are deployed into he field its all pre-program units.

I used to hear the radio techs quite often on the King County system using it. It has been a while since I have heard anything. I believe it was stated on this board that only the techs radios were enabled for this function. I'm sure one of the tech guys could respond.

I-TAC and I-CALL are nationwide simplex and conventionally repeated interoperability frequencies for the 800MHz spectrum. Funny thing is, around here if someone from one trunk system wants to talk to someone on a another system they usually have it programmed in their radios to talk directing on the neighboring system. Anyone here from outside the metro area are probably not on 800MHz and would be using LERN or VHF/UHF MARS which are patched to the 800MHz systems.

So, no you won't hear much of any traffic on them and I don't believe that techs are supposed to be using them either. They are public safety frequencies; the techs have their own talkgroups and frequencies. They may however run periodic tests.

I know for fact that at one point around 2000, 2001, EPSCA agencies had I-TAC/I-CALL in their radios and probably still do but it's been years since I've used a radio on that system.

If anyone knows more or can correct the above, take aim.

I don't think he was talking about the conventional non-trunked simplex and repeater I-Call and I-Tac channels similar to the state ops channels.
I was responding to the radio to radio Individual Call where only the two radios involved can talk and hear each other. This isn't a talkgroup but a private connection. I'm not sure of the proper term for it.

oh! in MDC-1200 Motorola calls it Select Call. In SmartNet/SmartZone I think its Private Call, like in iDen. ya, techs use it. I've never seen it used by anyone else but my field of view was very narrow when I used the system as a lowly volunteer.

It's purely radio to radio.
And the system techs now primarily use the microwave phones--there are phones connected to the microwaves and the techs can talk directly from one site to another. Nobody can hear them, and they don't have to pay charges to a telco.

That's yet a third concept presented here.

The Private Call/Select Call uses the trunk system to talk from one radio ID to another, similar to NexTel Direct Connect. I believe in the system it creates a talkgroup based on the IDs of the two radios.

That's actually what I meant; AFAIK, it's not like a "simplex" mode, but it's vastly different than SelCall.

haha this thread went all over today :) it sounds like im not alone in noticing that for some time now no one has used this function of the KC trunking system, I was just cleaning up my programming and removing things I never Listen to, the wildcard for icall was one of them ...

I am now curious about new VC channels that are being trapped by UniTrunker. I think that ICalls may occur on reserved channels. I have seen this more than once on the KC system.

I still hear it used alot on the Portland system -372A. Also I have heard it occasionally on the UP trunked system in Portland. Don't believe I have ever heard it on WCCCA or Clackamas County systems.

I was just going to say that myself; I've seen it used at least once daily if I run UniTrunker but never heard it actually in use.

My understanding is that CCOM and WCCCA don't have it enabled.
