We had one of these on the hill in West Seattle where the water towers are. It was about a mile from the Elementary school I went to. I could hear it every wed at noon.

I forwarded this to my bro who now lives in PDX, and he mentioned that they could not hear it down at the Junior High school.

I think that depended upon atmospherics though, as I distinctly recall hearing it on some occasions at our house which was next to the Junior High.

While the siren itself will not be restored to running condition, it and it's place in local history will be preserved

Was yellow the origional color?

What was the source of light for the searchlights?

The searchlights had their own generator. It was a straight-6 Hercules gas engine that produced 78V DC at 150A. This was fed to a pair of carbon rods to make one heck of a big arc light.

I know that tower well. I went to the school that sits there. I don't know what it is now but it used to be John B. Allen Elementary school. And yes every Wednesday at noon it went off and we all crawled under our desks. They told us then it was for earthquakes but it really was for in-coming missiles. It was the height of the cold war then and Seattle was a major target with the military bases, Bremerton and Todd shipyards, Boeing, and the sea ports.

I doubt if my little desk would have helped me much.
