Reading this article http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2009401971_apwasilentquakes.html has got me asking iof anyone knows how this data is coming back to the UW?

While on a drive through NE Oregon, I came upon a decommisioned AT&T microwave site (pics taken by others of this site are posted here) that had some solar powered gear with UW inventory tags on it.

Which (ex) AT&T site ?

Near Maupin OR

It was a heavily fortified site (structurally speaking, the perimeter fence was POS)
Lots of RF there, but related to this post was what appeared to be some VHF yagis, horizontal polorized.

Not much in the way of seismic telemetry around here, but New England has a lot of flood warning telemetry.

The site near Maupin is on Criterion Summit and its mentioned in the above wiki link that elnw posted. Across the street you might notice another building which is a fiber regen station for the FTV fiber route. You could always contact the owner (Dan WA7QMV) and ask him what the antennas are for. Last time I spoke with him he mentioned having a UHF ham repeater at the site.

Yeah it's the Criterion Summit site.
It was 10+ years ago, so who knows if what I saw is still there.

It was all installed outside the building on the fence, on the NW side of the perimeter.

Several horizontal polorized yagis pointed different directions, solar panels, and all cables run to a large outdoor type NEMA enclosure.

"UW Seismology Lab" stickers on everything, as I recall.

Still wondering how that data is transported back.

Might be fun to set up our own monitoring station...

it looks like this tool would work for decoding the data sent from the mt st helens site.. sounds pretty much like what you were looking for.. might have to give this a try.

That Site is an Old USAF Air defence Command radar Site and The Tower was built for an ANFSP 14 or ANFSP 18 radar Between 1959-61 Most Likely Closed in 63 or 65 a Bit O History for YA,

Some of those old radar sites are hard to find. A handful show up if you go to http://wikimapia.org and type "gap filler" in the search box.

a bit off topic.. what are the crater looking objects all over that area in the aerial? I'm not familiar with the area but thought it looked out of place.

From a trip to Mt. St Helens which I picked the brain of a USGS scientist who was up there giving a lecture he said there is a few of the old "analog seismometers" in use still up there which they would "send any seismic activity using different levels of tones over the FM carrier waves to a recorder drum remotely." He mentioned they were low power at about 1W, which l am guessing they are setup with a yagi. He also said that the old units are being phased out as they break down for the new digital seismometers which of course encode everything in data packets over the radio.
