Wondering if anyone out there, and I know there are a few of you, who either can or knows someone who can check out and program a /\/\ Spectra mobile for a friend. He says he is pretty certain its 800 mhz and would like it to receive (only of course) the K.C. TRS? If you have any leads, PM me please!

Thanks!!!

Chuck

Feel free to call or pm me and I'll explain why that's a very bad idea.

It is okay to own Radios that do not transmit. Like I said in an earlier post Seattle used to set up your radio when they first went to the 800.

Sean and others know better, but I think the point here is that the Spectras will not support the direction this system is moving.

A more appropriate term for 800MHz trunk Spectras is "boat anchor"

My personal opinion is that if you have the ability to make the radio not affiliate to the TRS, I say sure go for it.

Lots of reasons not to do it.

What ID will you be using? You can't just pick one. Bad things happen if you dupe one. You could cause an issue to a user that already has that id, even if you think you've "disabled" the tx.

Your spectra will be garbage soon enough. They do not work post rebanding. I'd eBay it to somebody like 2wayguru.

There are also some issues that Motorola has taken people to court over. (Insert I'm not a lawyer clause here, and if you want to argue, feel free. I don't care.)

Unless you have the FTR key, you cannot inhibit the tx function of the radios. If you have a FTR key, Motorola would like to talk to you.

If your bit banging the codeplug, Motorola IPR types would like to know as well. Ask the guy in back east with the whole GP300 debacle.

Save your money and buy a scanner. Your better off. If you're thinking of buying something else newer, don't bother. Shuffle Band Plan will kill that. It involves the use of a hard key for programming. We tend not to share those keys.

We will program the radio for you. Depending on the number of talkgroups, the fee could be between $100 and $300, but then it will die post rebanding.

I feel your pain. I have all the cool toys and cannot listen to the juridiction that I live in. Sad sign of the times.

What overly-funded city do you live in?

(Encryption is friggin expensive to deploy. You pay for each key, for each radio, and of course you need at least one key loader and radios capable of encryption oh and don't get the option board for each radio too... This is why you typically only see encryption on special operations teams. )

Sean et al,

Thanks for the replies! He knows I am into radio and just asked the question....several months ago!! Anyway, I'm not up on all the Motorola stuff and since he just wanted it for Rx with the Tx disabled (if that is possible), he wanted me to find out for him. He has a H/D motorcycle that he uses doing escorts and acquired this radio from someone he knows and isn't even sure if it functions to begin with. If possible, he wanted to have the radio mounted on the bike. I know when looking at the install pictures, I see a lot of the guys have gotten a hold of some commercial stuff and had it programmed to Rx different systems in the area they live.

I will cut and paste your response along with the cost Sean; and send that to him in an email so he can see what it all entails and then get with him later. Maybe suggest something like a Uniden 346 with a RH96 remote head. That should give him what he is looking for with the ability to change as the system changes.

Chuck

Hmm. So the shuffled band plan that'll be in place post-rebanding is proprietary and unsupportable by any commercial scanners? If so, that's almost as bad as turning on encryption for the whole system, it seems.

If you consider that, Moneyrola SmartNet / SmartZone trunking on the whole is "proprietary", it's not necessarily so bad, as we have the trunking capable scanners now, likely due to licensing.

I think like any new front in this technology, we will in time see the scanners.

"But First..." there are likely both licensing and engineering issues to be addressed, before we see the next wave of trunking capable scanners.

The technology of "shuffled bandplans" on the whole is not new, it is however, newly being applied to the Moneyrola trunking protocols.
