Anyone have an update on when KC's 800 system will be rebanded? How is the revision going to work, and what impact will it have on user agencies (in terms of equipment and cost)?

Just curious, because I've heard nothing about it recently.

Thanks!

Wow! Thanks for the info--that was very informative! So essentially, no one knows sh*t about how rebanding affects KC's system.

Perhaps a call to Ms. Cleo is in order...

Yep -- we are a bunch of cut-ups. Our area (WA State) is the last on the list. Everything will have to be ok'ed by Canada as well. Running about a year behind. Should know more by next spring -- or summer. That's the best I can give you. A few licenses are slowing being converted or moved over to new frequencies. Give it another year or so.

I didn't answer before because I knew there was a conference call scheduled with the TA today. I just got off the call.

Things are, indeed, moving. There will be a lot of behind the scenes activity this year and into next year. I expect to see a lot of prep work, such as reprogramming radios with both old and new frequencies, next year and into 2010. Then we will be ready to make infrastructure changes and cut over to the new frequencies.

This is a very complicated process as we will need to do a lot of coordination between 5 different large trunked systems.

Wiz and MTM, thanks very much for the update--I really appreciate it.

I have heard from my department administrators that our Spectra mobiles and possibly our MTS2000's will become obsolete, and that as the process proceeds, user agencies (my department is part of the KC/VC group) will "get" new equipment.

Do know this to be the case?

Again, thanks for the update!

Short answer is "depends."

Longer answer is "maybe, maybe not."

More detail- There are 2 main factors that will require replacement: (1) the amount on memory in the radio (we will need to program twice as much information into the radios so they will work on both the new and old sets of frequencies) and (2) whether the manufacturer is willing to modify the firmware code. Both of these factors affect the answer to your question. It looks like most Spectras will need to be replaced, but the final answer can only come from an evaluation of the radios in your fleet. MTS2000's are even more complicated. It looks like "older units" may be replaced and "newer units" will not. The feature set in the radio may also play a part in the final answer. Your tekky folks would have a much better handle on this than I would.

Sorry for the wishy-washy answer, but that is all we have to go on at this time.

Indeed -- thanks for the update! So the rebanded system will still be a standard Motorola SmartZone network, with no larger move towards digital voice or anything like that being planned concurrently? Just new frequency assignments for each channel?
