Listening on the Mount Vernon freq I heard a trooper calling "Cascade". He was transmitting on 155.505 but I couldn't hear any return from the dispatcher. Any info?

I have noticed that as well for the past several days. From my location I can hear both repeaters, but they are definately in different locations as one comes in much clearer than the other.

The exchange I heard was a troop taking a couple to Newhalem. He did state he would be out of radio contact until he "headed back down". Apparently the repeaters don't work all the way up Hwy 20.

May have been accessing the Slate Peak repeater.
On the Okagnogan side they call it 'Slate', as in Slate Peak.
Speculation; maybe 'Cascade' is a District 7 designation on the Slate Peak machine.
Stevens and White have 'State' repeaters.
Slate repeater site sits at 7200', one can almost drive to it.

To the best of my recollection "Cascade" is the name used by the dispatch center for all of Skagit County. It used to be located near the community college in Mount Vernon. I don't know if it is still there or not. I do know that when MVPD and others call in they give their number and then add Cascade to the end.

It may be a similar situation to what we had in Benton County quite a few years ago. There were a couple of troopers living in Prosser. They had the Benton County Sheriff's Dept dispatch frequency in their mobile radios. They could talk to our dispatcher and we could talk car to car with them on the main channel. I don't know if this is the case in Skagit County but it sounds like he could have been talking to the "Cascade" dispatch center.

Wayne or "gramps"

No new repeater, sorry. What you likely heard was a trooper trying to call in via the base station at Newhalem, which provides coverage to part of the Cascade Highway (hence the call-in of 'Cascade').

Although it's not a repeater, that base station does operate on a split frequency. If you wanted to hear the dispatcher's response, you would have needed to listen on 159.045.

Happy eavesdropping.

Sorry, that was a typo on my part. Corrected now.

That's what I get for trying to read two columns at once...

Keep the peace(es).
