I found another nice place.... Selah rest stop outside of Yakima. UniTrunker ran rather well...

The site number 257 means (256+1) is (site 001-001) = Ft Lewis

I think 260,65 probably is trash from UniTrunker - or it could have been an ICALL. Site 260 (001-004) was tripping my CloseCall at the rest stop. I never picked up site 261 (001-005) which must be on the East side of the range - Vernita side.

Most interresting is the list of active TGs on the Yakima side...

8631, 8632, 8701, 8702, 8706, 8711, 8714, 8715, 8717, 8718, 8719, 44443, 44463

8717 is the Yakima Range Control Group.

[edit] only the bottom sites 260 and up are in Yakima. The top half is Ft Lewis.

:D The old VHF system -- had the Post FD share the same channel with the Madigan Hospital MP / Fire unit. That could explain the assignment in talk groups. The "Range Forest Fire" units had their own private VHF channel. The MP's had 3 channels and a 4th channel -- extender "mobile repeater" frequency. CID had two channels. "R & U" Repair & Utilities had two UHF channels. And the Main Post Hospital had a private dispatch channel. ---- Most of the I-5 -- from Lakewood to the Thurston County Line -- is BELOW most of the transmitter sites. Pick a better spot -- other than on the freeway.

The primary site at the Fort is around 400', the secondary, or west fill, is exactly 353'. I don't know where the east fill is.

DSTE's spot at the park is around 275'; mine at McChord is 293'.

And from sites that are not very tall --- you get a lower angle -- and thus very poor coverage along the interstate 5 area -- which is in a hole. Coverage in the Lakewood area or Ponders Corner -- Lakewood Center area should be fine. The hill side area near Steilacoom is a good spot.

NO. There is a park -- just inside the city of Steilacoom -- just east of the road into north Fort -- but the area just east of the city of Steilacoom -- near the college south towards the base is a lot better. I have always liked the Tillicum area best. I would check in with Seattle Fire on 33.90 Mhz from my Army mobile unit -- while having lunch in Tillicum --- LOL. Just watch out for the locals -- most of which, have been seen on the TV program - COPS. And that's no joke.

Fort Steilacoom Park? Too shadowed to the south; I've used Pierce College's faculty parking lot (the highest one) before with great results, but security was aggressively un-impressed.

Hey DSTE, where do you go? I use the east side of McChord, so I can listen to both UHF trunked systems, and watch planes....And zone out.

I used to to sit by those trucking companies parking lot until one day base secuirty rolled by real slow and after I left not too soon after a sheriff car drove by that way (maybe coincidence, who knows). Now I park in the lot of the coffee shop. Still close, but stand out less.

But my spot isn't obvious...
