I was on the fire in 1998 that burned just east of Rock Creek Canyon. (Willrobinson's switchbacks) Conditions were similar to what we have now. For the most part, that fire wasn't stopped until it ran out of timber to burn. I've seen big ponderosa pine go up in that area in seconds. It looks like there is a gas jet under the tree. That fire was about 12 miles pretty much due east of the current one.

One more before bedtime...

This is the top of Three Creeks Hill on 97. It's the best one I've found that shows the lay of the land in the fire zone. The pass is about 6 road miles from this spot. The 2011 fire burned to the other side of the ridge in the foreground.

Disclaimer- I didn't take any of the photos in this thread. If I get a chance I'm going to take some in the morning.

Today is going to be a make or break day on the pass I'm thinking. Here is the G-dale weather forecast...

Sunny, with a high near 92. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Without a big wide dozer line on the south flank of the fire it's going to be all they can do to to keep it on the north side of the ridge. The worst case scenario would be having another fire start someplace else and having air support diverted from this fire, IMHO.

If you can't tell, I'm like the old fire horse kicking around in his stall wanting to go when he smells smoke.

Latest from Bicostal media-

http://kihramfm.com/common/page.php?fee ... &is_corp=1

Officials at the Mile Marker 28 Fire northeast of Goldendale have increased the size of the blaze to 17,171 acres, but that has more to do with better mapping than increased growth overnight. Fire public information officer Tim Johnson said the difficult terrain and smoke had made it difficult to get precise line mapping. The fire is now listed with a 15 percent containment level, and Johnson indicated there was very little growth overnight. Johnson said the 1,112 firefighters today will be looking to secure fire lines in a number of locations on the west side of Highway 97, as well as additional work on the lines immediately east and south of where the fire line crosses the highway. Johnson adds while winds are still strong, weather conditions are getting better for fighting the fire, with higher humidity dampening the air. There are no changes to evacuation advisories, and Highway 97 remains closed. More specific details on the evacuation areas are available on the Klickitat County Sheriff's Facebook page. The sheriff's office says there is poor air quality in the east end of Klickitat County due to the smoke, and those with respiratory problems are encouraged to stay indoors. Klickitat Valley Health in Goldendale is offering free basic respiratory masks to those who might need them, and the county health department will set up an air quality monitoring station in the next few days. A community meeting will be held Sunday evening at 7 p.m. in the Bickleton Grange Hall.

Weather is improving, this morning was the first time in a couple of weeks that my bathroom mirror was fogged up when I got out of the shower. Barring any unforeseen weather or terrain issues I think they will start getting a handle on the fire today.
