155.430: (DTMF) covered by "Units check your car radio for a Red Light, turn off your radio and call CENCOM...

Almost a daily occurrence... Any of you Kenwood techs out there knows what does this :?:

The TK-8180 on my desk only is red when transmitting but I haven't played with Emergency on this one yet. I'll go do that now actually... Stand by...

It looks like you can program the radio to hot mic and send it's emergency signal for X seconds without displaying anything on the display or alarming and then it will receive for X seconds and then transmit again. My guess is someone is bumping their emergency button and because it's programmed to be so discrete they don't even know it. So the red LED is it transmitting (which it did show while in Emergency mode).

The TK7150 VHF radios are the ones doing this. They will randomly start sending a tone for no apparent reason and with no user interaction. The tone is also heard in the speaker of the offending radio but the user can see the transmit light if they happen to look. The transmitter will then timeout. The problem is rare but with enough of this model in the fleet from few years ago it does happen. Reflashing the radio supposedly cures it.

I am observing a reduction in the number of incidents and I presume this is because the offending radios are being reflashed, hence Cencom's transmission now during these incidents of "If Your Red Light is On Turn Your Radio Off and Call Us"...

Assuming one's handheld is turned up loud enough to hear it over the DTMF blaring from your vehicular radio, and the vehicular radio doesn't sufficiently desense the handheld, the involved radio usually falls silent
a few seconds later...

However it is a common enough occurrence that the sheriff's deputies
have become "trained" and the annoying DTMF can usually be silenced
only a second or two after the radio malfunctions :bowrofl: and the "turn your POS radio off" announcement doesn't have to be made...

Still, if there is an "Emergency Traffic Only" incident and one of these
Kenwoods decides on its own to start transmitting... :chaingun:
