So from what I can tell a nut fired off 4 rounds at a Border Patrol Sargent near Sumas on Jones Rd. Anyone monitoring this. I dont have a digital scanner, but I dont think they are encrypted. Does anyone have any inside info on this situation?

Right now they are in a standoff with him, in his yard, with about 10 units from several agencies.

Apparently he is an older guy, with special forces experience. The agent wasnt hit by the rounds, and the suspect is now in custody. They are currently doing a search of his house to make sure their are no more suspects inside. Seems to be wrapping up.

Side note-- With all their fancy schmancy high tech radio systems that the Border Patrol uses, the county units that were enroute to possibly save this agents ass, were unable to communicate with the BP. The County units seemed surprised about this, and unaware that this was the case. You think their would be some kind of mutual aid channel that both agencies could go to when stuff likes this goes down.

Yeah that is kinda interesting. I know Blaine/Sumas/BP all interop ok but never know how County tied into all of that.

That's why I dont understand counties whos PD is on UHF, fire is on VHF and there's an 800 mhz trunk system floating around in there. Talk about a communications night mare. That's why people like Moneyrolla have to make multi-band portables and people have to buy them for oodles and oodles of money because they didn't coordinate in the first place.

Interoperability is also necessary in mutual aid situations in which one agency is called to assist another agency. Examples include a vehicle pursuit that enters another jurisdiction and responses when an agency crosses a jurisdictional boundary because it has vehicles closer to the location of a crime in progress (such as a county sheriff’s deputy responding to a robbery at a bank near a city/county line)

Im sure there is some out there that can sell them a radio interoperability system package for such events in that might happen again in the future???????????

BP is on VHF and the county sheriff is on UHF, so mutual aid channel isn't possible. The only way this could work is if BP had a patch for UHF. Most of us know that King County has mutual aid system called MARS for both VHF and UHF that patches in their 800MHz system... A lot of agencies have his: http://www.raytheon.com/capabilities/products/acu1000/ . All of the incident command motor couches for Snohomish County and the RACES comm van have these. They are cool and pricy equipment. I guess when it comes down to it, it has to do with money and politics. Some agencies don’t want you on her frequencies. For example WSP won't authorize outside agencies to TX on their frequencies, just RX.

Fixed that for you. I know several that can/do work on WSP freqs- mostly State, but some of the area ones as well.

Border Patrol Agent Comes Under Fire Near Sumas

SUMAS, Wash. - A man with a rifle opened fire at a U.S. Border Patrol agent near Sumas last evening.

The agent was patrolling in the 4000 block of Jones Road at about 8:00 p.m. when he heard gunshots, said Whatcom County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Hester.


“The agent had several bullets fly over the top of his marked Border Patrol unit. The agent took evasive action, and drove to a safe location, where he began to try and ascertain where the shots had come from,” said Hester.

The agent wasn’t injured.

Responding officers spotted a man with a rifle in the 4300 block of Jones Road.


“They began to give commands to the suspect, who was initially confrontational, and refused to put the rifle down. After a period of negotiation, the suspect eventually put his weapon down and was taken into custody without incident by Sumas Police and U.S. Border Patrol,” Hester said.

The suspect is identified as Kenneth R. Ericson, 43, of Sumas.

Ericson may face federal charges in the shooting.

There’s no word yet on why the shots were fired.

Sumas man arrested, accused of shooting at U.S. Border Patrol agent's car

A Sumas man was arrested Wednesday night, May 20, for allegedly firing a rifle two to three times at a passing U.S. Border Patrol vehicle.

The shots did not hit the car or the agent driving it.

Officers arrested Kenneth R. Ericson, 43, at his home on the 4300 block of Jones Road with the rifle in hand, said Sgt. Kevin Mede of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. Ericson initially was confrontational when contacted by a sheriff's deputy, but eventually gave up his rifle.

Mede said he did not know the rifle's model.

The agent was driving eastbound on Jones Road at about 8 p.m. when he passed the house and heard the shots, Mede said.

Believing he was taking fire, the agent radioed for help, and nearby Border Patrol, Sheriff's Office and Sumas Police Department patrol cars converged on the house.

"We've got to protect ourselves," said Sgt. Kevin Moyes of the Sheriff's Office.

About 15 police vehicles were outside the house at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies and agents interviewed the man Wednesday night before booking him into the Whatcom County Jail.

Mede said the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle will review the incident Thursday to determine if it warrants a federal charge.

If it declines to press charges, the Whatcom County Prosecutor's Office will determine what to charge the man with.
