"Wednesday, 2 Sep 09, 5:56 am PDT - A briefing by Incident Commander Dietrich is underway as I write this. He reported that Mount Wilson "is still in good shape" and described their difficulties in communication on the site due to the intense radio frequency interference emanating from the broadcast facilities on the mountain. The Super Scooper dropped 7500 gallons of fire retardant gell yesterday. "

Things seem to be calming down today with the fire, but of course this is L.A. so the media instantly found another headline (Michael Jackson's funeral). Either way it gave me an opportunity to tinker with the L.A. audio feed. There was some background hum and slight audio distortion which was solved by inserting a coupling transformer of appropriate impedance. Another annoyance was digital artifacting on staticy signals. This happened because the static puts enough junk on the audio to make it almost uncompressable which in turn gets cropped by the bandwidth limiter. After increasing the upstream bandwidth limit by 50% it finally cleared up. In general the audio feed should sound much better. Most people could probably care less about this stuff but thought I'd post it for those who are interested.

Imagine the inter-op headache once the USFS goes P25/6.25kHz, with the number of radios involved on these large scale incidents.
