Because there is no money in anyone's budget for training. The system works well, the capabilities are there.. But the system has been up and running since the spring of 2003 and the end users still don't know how to use it to its potential.

I hope that when it comes to spending your Homeland Security grants down there, it's not all splurged on equipment, but training training training.....

A true statement in many areas. These systems look great on paper, lots of money is spent getting it on the air, administrators go to meetings and proclaim the "latest and greates" in technology has been introduced to meet our changing needs, blah blah blah....

.....and then, it all falls flat....because the lowest common denominator (the dispatchers/field users) are not trained in the capabilities AND they do not practice those contingencies. Policies are not created, so there is no guidance in how to make the system shine in an emergency.

There are a *few* out there that understand this, but I guess we're in the wrong business. Since I can't hang an RF engineering degree or Motorola Training Certificate on my wall, my opinion isn't necessarily as valid.

I think PK is correct. Correct me if Im wrong. I guess if the WSP gets involved then its a LERN operation? There was a chase that started in Lacey and ended up in Montesanto, this past Mon night. Long and short of it was by the time it got to Grays Harbor Co and no Oly area WSP units were availible, to join in, they finally switched to LERN after 25 miles or so, several units along the way attempted spike strips, this info was all relayed via seperate juridictions on Tac 2 City and then Tac1 county, all on VHF legacy systems.

True the 14 year old was driving like a maniac with a blown tire , at speeds up to 100 and fianally crashed, but a McCleary unit attempted a SS and had to listen to his dispatcher relay for location before Hoquiam State switched it to LERN. They did do one at the scales on hwy 8 and the driver took the scale off ramp and came back on again before another one was sucessful later on. I think it would have made the news if other chases hadn't occured back to back this week. It was still an exciting chase to listen in on.

I wasn't working that night but here is the unfortunate thing. For us, a supervisor, road supervisor, has to make the request to move to LERN. It's not an automatic thing. I wish we, dispatchers, had the ability to make that call when more then one county is involved or WSP joins, though most of them have access to our TAC1 and TAC2. Had some said, "hey let's move it to LERN." the people in Grays Harbor could have had a heads up. That's where we use the phone to let them know what is coming.

Now, having been on the other side of the radio in a patrol car, I know that that is the last thing sometimes is to remember to switch things to LERN so I don't mean this post to second guess those involved. Sounds like they had their hands full.

3 pursuits in 3 days...Glad today is my Friday! Though they are still fun to dispatch! :-)

I guess WE over hear in hickville part of WA does it all wrong. Any pursuits or major incidents dispatchers automaticly direct units to lern or apropiate channel. No arguements no discussion just do what they say and all will be fine. (It usally is) so maybe somebody should turn the heat up on some administration heads and tell them TO LISTEN to the PEOPLE whose LIVES depend on their radios.
Mike

P.S. I got to watch evrything on my computer and it looks like everyone behind a car and a microphone did a excellant job with what they had.
