Police Arrest Bellingham Man After Five-Hour Standoff

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Officers arrested a Bellingham man following a five-hour standoff on Meridian Street Saturday.
Sgt. Kevin Mede from the Whatcom County Sheriffs Office says 35 year-old Toby Ericksen destroyed property, threatened to kill 5 people and assaulted one person at a family gathering around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
Ericksen then led Police on a chase through Bellingham ending at his home in the 2900 block of Meridian.
Sgt. Mede says Ericksen barricaded himself in the home but eventually surrendered to officers.
He says Ericksen was reportedly suffering from a severe mental illness, and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital for evaluation before being booked into Whatcom County Jail.
Ericksen is facing multiple charges, including felony harassment, assault, felony eluding, resisting arrest, and malicious mischief.
