So...hypothetically speaking...users of pirated versions of Windows 7 Ultimate won't be able to download it?

Hypothetically, you can download it but it won't pass verification during install.

...but it'll probably work anyway.

only if your pirated copy of windows wont pass G.A. and you really had to pirate it from a bad source to fail that test.

this thread sounds like a odd advertisement. M$ 4 years after everyone else had free products finally jumps on the boat.

not to mention the product was supposed to be released over a year ago

also not picking on your comment but "works great" hehe that mean so far you didnt get a virus or it found a bunch of stuff that was a virus? or ...it hasnt slowed down your computer or crashed it...yet

I like running without a virus scanner. Then you never have to worry about getting rid of the virus.

I run Sophos on my main machine.

I thought about the advantage of downloading Microsoft's own virus scanner and I quickly realized, "Isn't it because of Microsoft that we have to have these anti-virus programs? Shouldn't they just fix their operating system?"

You've obviously never coded before. Bugs and security holes aren't something you add in on purpose. You get trained to write secure code, you test it, you have other people test it, and then once it gets released to millions of people, it gets tested in ways the developers never thought possible.

as taco said, windows software is actually awesome if it wasn't for Microsoft we likely wouldn't be where we are. Meaning with out them we wouldn't have viruses because it would be arguable that we wouldn't be in the state we are in of technology today.

Linux is just as vulnerable and more so (OSX in that as well), its just not used as much, patched faster because of the nature of the open code, and there isn't that big of a pay off to attack it since "everyone uses windows"

over the years NT, XP, 2003, 2008, Win7 are some of the best operating system code that you can want to have. NT was secure as hell, people are just lazy and didnt secure it. XP was very secure-able but the world saw a HUGE leap in mal-x code in that time, 2003 addressed a lot of the issues. 2008 and 7 are the "new age" of idiot proof software and mal-x protection.

you cant assume that m$ can battle the whole world when it comes to crappy developers and drivers and code. 80% of the time the issue wasnt M$ fault remember that the core of windows is the HAL and if you write a shitty driver and it crashes you cant blame M$ for the crash on windows when the vendor not testing the code.

if you install only Microsoft code and drivers your system will run a lot faster a lot longer and a lot more stable (for example I only run windows and office on the physical operating system, everything else is in a virtual kernel or environment EVERYTHING! even this firefox browser) I never have a crash I leave the computer on for months or quarters with out a reboot. (normally patching on the quarter) and I have the speed and performance I demand of a PC also I only need to rebuild the computer once every 3-5 years and not the every 1 year trick.

anywhoo </rant>

Linux is ... patched faster because of the nature of the open code,

This is the key.
Open source = patched faster.

Ironically, with the wealth that Microsoft has amassed, it hasn't seen fit to invest more of that wealth towards resolving these security issues more quickly, or even on a preventive basis.

Yes, code is not "tested" until it hits the real world.
That said, I cannot defend Microsoft's history with security - or should I say, lack thereof.

I guess I hit a sour spot with the microsoft comment....

Taco, I've never coded, only HTML.

It's hard to word properly what I'm trying to say....lol...I give up.

Feel free to beat my head against the wall.

They could always spend "more" money on this and millions of other things, but do realize that right now they are spending "some" money on research at all times.

I beta tested Windows 7, and I'm beta testing Office 2010 right now. However, I have not tested to see how well it performs with "dancing pandas.exe" that I got from my Nigerian buddy.

I, as, usual, have nothing to add except an anecdote: I downloaded and installed the MS beta test antivirus software they were touting waaaaaaay back in 11/04. It might've worked great, but I was too busy staring at the BSOD to notice. A format later, and I was back in business....sans beta test AV.

so it sounds like as long as they continue to include format.exe with the product things work ok?
