It was raining sideways. I use all pro bodies, so they're weather sealed, but there's no way to keep the water off the front of the lens. In that second shot, you can see a water droplet right above the moon. I'm working on the rest of the images, but it's a real pain to clone out spots like that.

I've used a Spintec before on a video shoot. Those work wonders, but I can't afford that for a still shoot:

What shape is the lens hood?

Which lens hood? I used a Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 for those shots. The lens hood is your standard run-of-the-mill petal shape.

That makes it bit more difficult. Suppose the only other option is to put something off the frame and to the side, but with as wide of a lens it'd probably have to be too far back to be effective.

I was blocking the rain with my body as was going sideways. I was also using my right hand to keep a light flare out of frame. I probably looked like a moron.

Nice Photos Mike! I haven't made it down yet to Blanton Hill in my travels to sites yet, but Jim Sr sure does have a nice setup up there!

I always like going up to Skyline here in Portland....never know what you or who you will find up there!

Thanks! There's a lot of stuff up there- even an old AT&T Long Lines tower. There's still a cable run from that tower to KVAL-TV. Network programming used to come via the Long Lines network.

Finally, internet access in my office! Of course, it's as slow as dial-up... Computer->WAP->300' copper line to main office->router->master switch->more copper line->yagi antenna->3 mile straight shot to tower.
