Post subject:  antenna question
I hope this is the right forum.

Anyone know what would happen if I tried to transmit with a cb on a radio shack discone? I won't blow anything up will I? I'm more worried about frying the radio than the antenna.

I would not recommend it as you will probably damage your radio.

Most discone designs can handle transmitters from about 100mhz to 900mhz with a somewhat tolerable SWR. I believe the Diamond and perhaps the Radio Shack models have an optional base-loaded extension which will bring it down to about 50mhz. CB is on 27mhz.... You might consider shopping for a good CB base antenna like an Antron 99.

Thanks for the advise Rich. I have obtained an old/very powerful Cb.

Its my fathers Cb from the early 70's. I remember as a kid hearing him talk to people from England and Australia. I don't want to mess it up, as it has "aftermarket" switches and the such.

I'm just hoping I don't get fined like he did for using it :lol:

Another question: Are those 400.00$ "moonraker" antennas worth the money? The ones that are 16 feet long with a zillion parts that look like they can talk to pluto worth it?

Thanks again; I will be spending a couple of hundred bucks at a CB shop this weekend getting it supertuned.

The "Moonraker" is a cubical-quad directional antenna which will require an antenna rotator to use. I'm sure you will be quite satisfied with its performance provided you have the room to put it up. I would not recommend a Moonraker in neighborhoods which have covenants :)

While not as enforced as they used to be, the FCC regulations on CB power and frequencies still should be followed. Running high-powered HF radios (ham/CB/marine/whatever) has the potential of interfering with consumer electronics which often times generates calls to the FCC.

Perhaps, but then again I've seen more than a lifetimes worth of improper radio/antenna combinations not to mention chopped-up CB's hooked to everything from a coat hanger to a Moonraker 6. I'll spare you the story of one individual who hooked his CB to his cable TV coax.... suffice it to say it was a on 2-way cable system where everything from 5-42mhz is carried upstream.

That reminds me of my favorite trick to do at work. We were getting rid of some MT500 Converta com units with separate VHF 30 watt power amps. I would make sure there were some CB fanatics around as I was tossing the power amps into the garbage can while at the same time I would say "don't connect these power amps to your CB radio....that would be illegal" Check back in a few minutes only to find that the power amps were all gone from the garbage can.

Some times it's just too easy to get people to dig around the garbage cans.

No! It was not an April fools joke, I was actually going to try it. I was a little concerned about messing up this radio, which would smoke anything on the market today! I dare anyone to challenge me on that. Please do.

My reasoning; I am more into HEARING things than talking. So HAM crap and the such is of no interest of me. My knowledge of sparking up a conversation with someone in a 3rd world country is lacking a bit. I bet its great and all, but I never had an interest.

I hate being bored and since I feel like I have RECEIVED everything I have wanted to. I thought I would try and wake up this old radio and give it a try.

NOW that I have been given some help by Rich and my antenna MATCHES my radio I am glad to report that the weather is great in Australia. Beat that without a sat or repeater. :twisted:

Oh yeah, I work for a major Cable company. I enjoy the the tranceivers connected to the cable system, JOB SECURITY!

OH Nothing that was a different kind of well than what you perceived. The other well would have meant that if I wanted something else...it would be to aim one of my antennas at your location and completly disrupt any media experinece that you could possibly have (tv, radio, telephony, ham, scanning), but I would never do that, its against the law :idea:

I have a feeling you aren't capable of such of feat. Besides, I picture you driving a run-down Gremlin with unused rusted antenna's and broken mounts along with an "I love my cat" bumper sticker.
Your dash is full of empty dunkin donut boxes and old scanner freq lists. This along with you sporting your favorite baseball cap that says "Larry" on the front and the bill coming off the side of your head would just give you away.
