is there enough room to move those police depts to uhf ???...band seemed very crowded when I was in LA in Sept .. lapd/laso in the T-band and others either on the 453 or 460mhz area

vhf has its advantages and disadvatages too depending on the size and design of the town or city.. maybe thats why the no BIG rush
to move to uhf.

could be the fcc will not grant any further users to the uhf band to protect those that are on there now??????

Most of the "dirty dozen" towns are smaller suburban cities. Some, like the city of Downey -- have populations between 50,000 to 100,000 persons. Downey was able to apply for several UHF T-Band channels -- for a city & regional Fire Dispatch system. Several other Public Safety Agencies have been able to apply for new UHF channels -- while others, like the LA Airports have paid cash for UHF channels. LA County has just been given an entire new UHF T-Band Channel (Channel 15) and will add many new channels to the existing system. There are "open" un-used UHF channels still availible. The entire LA County area has several "interoperability" Mutual aid channels and is one of a few areas that is very active in sharing emergency "APB" broadcasts. The "ICIS" trunked system run by the city of Glendale connects 10 cities togather and gives the users almost total UHF radio coverage any where within the LA basin area - for both Police & Fire operations. Sooner or later -- every Police agency and many fire deprtments will be on UHF channels. Most fire departments, however will remain on high band VHF channels. A few, like the LA County Fire Dept -- will use both VHF high Band and UHF channels. At this time only LA City Fire remains on 18 non-trunked 800 mhz channels and the city of Signal Hill (police + PWD) (800 mhz trunked) are not on UHF or VHF High Band channels.

The walls must have ears !!! The city of Bell Police have just turned their system into full repeater mode. Station KNGT-891, 155.19 (BR/M) ( 107.2 ) and an input of 154.815. The 154.815 was vacated by next door - Huntington Park PD, which used the frequency as its' main Police Dispatch channel for over 25 years. The "Central Cities" area around Bell have become very industialized and the "Noise" on 154.815 caused Huntington Park PD to move off of the channel. In fact, most scanners stop scanning on 154.815, the electrical noise is so bad. Every VHF High band system, within LA County is now using a repeater. It only took 40 years.
