Can anyone recall hearing something funny, dumb or unusual on the scanner?

Sure, lots of stuff that goes on out there.

- Heard F-15s chasing a Cessna over the Peninsula, arming and locking their sidewinders, and having to rotate aircraft because of speed disparities.

- Heard the Pierce County chase of a suspected bank robber, and the anxiety in the voices of the chasers, asking permission to take the guy out. They, based on his driving tactics, were positive that the bad guy was a cop, and didn't like it.

- Heard the mounting calls of active fires and power line calls in Spokane last summer as a supercell thunderstorm struck, and the frustration as the tasks mounted faster than people could get them done.

- The tanker fire on I-5 was an interesting listen. Took nearly all of District 1 and 7's apparatus, and they waited almost an hour to call out a crash truck from Paine Field to extinguish. Of course, the hour that passed had jammed the roads in the area, further delaying the response.

- Naked people calls are always good for a laugh.

- Everyone wants in on the car chase

-

Just last week one of the SPD dispatchers made a broadcast that one of the precinct vehicle access doors was stuck half way..."Up or down, depending on whether you are an optomist or a pessimist".
------
And sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I remember when I was working Fire Investigation and was Southbound on Aurora Ave. N. near N. 34th Street at 3 AM in the morning. I looked Southeast and saw a column of black smoke and heavy flames coming from a large building East of Lake Union near the freeway. So I radioed the fire dispatcher and asked them if they had received calls of a large fire in that location. In very obvious disbelief the dispatcher replied, "No, Marshal 5". I gave them the closest intersection I could think of and told them I was responding, and then suggested they set up for a 2-11. They then asked me if I could give a better location. I told them that I was about two miles away and that the responding companies would be able to find it when they saw the flames as they left the station because it was the only fire visible. But I'd give them a corrected location when I arrived. I always wanted a tape of that dispatch, but never got one. The chief called a 2-11 as he left the station.

I once heard Seatac Chief 407 notifying Valley Com that he was on 167 and had a visual on a fully involved port a potty.

"Charlie 0"

"Charlie 0..."

"If I was at the summit and I wanted pancakes, where would I go?"

"Uh, the Family Pancake House?"

"Very good! I have a detail for you there..."

Earlier last year, there was a terrorism drill in Redmond involving hostages at Microsoft's main admin building, bad guys with poison gas, the whole ball of wax. Those guys could have been Oscar contenders. I realized it was a drill only after alerting everyone in the office to listen to the scanner...

When the bomb threat at the courthouse took place a few weeks later, I didn't buy a word of it until I read about in the paper the next morning!

It wasn't funny, but my most memorable would be about 10 years ago when I got my first scanner. A trucker stopped in the middle of the Narrows Bridge, got out & locked the 18 wheeler & jumped off. I listened as the WSP scrambled to remove the vehicle, while the Coast Gaurd looked for the body.

Another one was listening to the local police pick up my wife's drunkin friend after she strormed out of our place because of an aurgument with her boyfriend who was listening with us, hehe.

Just this last Christmas morning, about 2am.

SPD officer requests to have Lincoln towing dispatched to impound his patrol vehicle in the Pioneer Square area.

When the dispatcher asked what was wrong with the unit, the officer said "It's got a dead battery and it's a piece of sh*t!" :)

Happy New Year!
