I noticed a new Starbucks drive-thru in my town was using headsets to take orders and decided to find out what frequency the were using. I tried all the usual low band, hi band, UHF & 900MHz frequencies with no luck. Finally I resorted to going inside with my Scout counter and a PRO-83 set on close-capture. Still nothing! Finally I asked an employee with a headset on if I could take a look at it. He was happy to show me how it worked (all the time still no action out of the Scout or PRO-83). I noted it was a H.M. Electronics unit with blue buttons on the beltpack portion. I thanked him and went out wondering if my gear was not working properly. At home I looked H.M. Electronics site on "Google" and found that HME has a new system called "Wireless IQ". Checking out the PDF for this system I found that it uses 2.4 GHz Digital frequency hopping & time division duplex. No license required. So much for listening to people order coffe at this Starbucks. I guess we will have to wait for Uniden & Radio Shack to come out with something new or join the NSA. We can always hope their 2.4 GHz wifi hotspot will be messed up by it and maybe they will go back to analog. Jim N7UAP Bellingham, WA |

I knew things would get better -- now that Mr. Powell is leaving the FCC --- but this is too much to hope for. Someday soon -- we can all use our own radio channels without having to listen to "mickey dees". Oh thank heaven --- no more 7-11's on my radio channel. Great news but did someone get paid off. This sounds to good to be true. |

| Post subject: | 2.4 gHz fones and wireless |
I finally got a laptop with wireless. And fired up NetStumbler, which is used for wardriving. Sittiing in the kitchen and watching the nice strong graphic signal display of the wireless router in the computer room. Grabbed the wireless telephone (not cellfone), and started clicking on the channel button with the fone off the hook. Bingo, nice strong signal pops up on Ch 11 and NetStumbler tries to decode its MAC address. Voila! 00:00:00:00 etc. Walk around the house and the signal strength drops. kinda neat to see how that free NetStumbler program picked up the fone. FYI--I drove around N Everett yesterday. NStumbler found about 80 AP's and about 60% of them didn't have encryption on. Also interesting that many folks not running encryption had changed their default SSID to something other than the manufacturer's SSID (like linksys) and were still in unsecured mode. :lol: |
