Post subject:  800MHz and 700MHz etc. etc.

Much of the discussion of the restructure of 800MHz spectrum centers on Public Safety and Nextel. Alghough this many not impact us here in Puget Sound region right away or minimanlly for years to come; I do have a few thoughts:

1.) Our current scanners we use today (2004/2005) such as Pro93/95, BC780/785/796/245/250D etc. may not trunk correctly in the new subbands for 800MHz.

2.) none of these scanners cover 700MHz spectrum (exception: a few of the high end comm rec'vrs from Icom, AOR - which don't trunktrack inthemselves).

I wonder if makers such as GRE and Uniden will comeout with next-gen scanners to address these band coverage changes? Interesting to note that the specs for the newly released Uniden BC246T does not cover 700.
I realized that there are no real users there (yet...). Possibly the reason was $ from GRE/Unidens standpoint, as for the scanner to bring in the 512 to 806 segment a redesign of in the radio would need to be done (VCOs, mixer, IF stages, filter passbands, etc.).

For those that aren't already aware of the 800MHz restructure, see:

there is another link at bottom of that page to FCC Order in pdf.

Post subject:  First 700mhz Public Safety Radio system in US

Will be up and running in Jan 05 in Bannock County Idaho.

Little ho-dunk Idaho having the first on the air system in the US.

I am a member of the regioal 700mhz planning group for Idaho and I'ver spoken to the Motorol;a rep and the local IT guys in Bannack County they are doing on the air testing this month and hope to be up and running in January. Sysytem will be fully encrypted, so much for scanning in Bannock County :-(

We here in Ada County (Boise) will be another 3 years before we get on the air.

Post subject:  Yes That's what I'm being told

Yes that is correct I believe ther is some info on the Idaho 700 mhz regional report. http://www.700region12.org/

BTW: Washington has a site also like most states. However keep one thing in mind Idaho has few if any UHF TV stations so they can make the transition quickly with approval from the FCC on frequation allocations.

Hope that helps. I doubt any scanner manufacturer will jump on the desogn of a 700mhz scanner untill large Merto areas start going 700.

As we all know PROFIT. Plus with the requirment for encryption scanners may become a thing of the past hopefully not. I've been listing for 35 years. Anyway our moving to 700 won't effect me as I work for the county and require a Public Safety radio, so I'll end up getting a radio and portable, and

I have to carry the portable for my job so my scanner won't be much use if they go encrypted. Some PD will go automaticly like Metro Drug units which is the norm across the US now, but gereral comms may be in the clear. as far as FD and EMS it's a good guess on them..

:D My mother always told me to wash my ears -- but until now I never knew she ment that someday a potato from Idado would get stuck in everyones ear - thus preventing anyone from listening to Police or Fire radio calls ever again. A sad day.
