If this "assault rifle" is what most of the world (sans media) would call an AR-15, what's he gonna do, throw it at the bear?

My preferred armament for that would be a Mossberg 590 Intimidator with a full load of 3-inch slugs. Makes for some nasty recoil but would make hamburger out of the bear.

My Alaska time saw me carrying an 870 with 3 inch slugs, and always making sure the S&W .500 (the 2.5" bbl model) was in it's Pelican case in the truck.

This last bear season I was alternating between a Marlin .45-70 for longer distances, and my own 870 with 3" slugs for close in work. for awhile I was carrying a friend's Ruger in .45 Long Colt as backup.

Thoughts on the 45-70? Thinking about 450 Marlin for over here.

What's up with a 2.5" barrel with a .500 S/W? Damn! Easy to carry yes.
The .357 w/ 2" was a two handed affair, had to knock down to .38's.

So how was it up there with radio comms? Is there 2 meter along the main roads?

Pain, thy name is Remington. .45-70 has proven a pretty good round for me, but the crazy trajectories at anything over about 150 yards are getting old, especially the high angle stuff I was doing..."What's the hold over? 18 feet? WTF?!" I was using 405gr Rem softies, but found that I liked the expansion of those Leverevolutions from Hornady. I loaned it out to a guy who's whitetailing in South Dakota right now, and am thinking about going to a standard .308 with those Barnes triple shock rounds, same guy said he nailed an elk at 300 yds with one, DRT. Well, that and the Marlin is expensive to feed.

I shot one cylinder through it; it scared the hell out of me. And to think my first handgun was a Colt Anaconda.

Dunno, I didn't get my Tech ticket until mid 2008. In my AOR, the main comms were on VHF marine radios and CB- every house has one or both, and most vehicles...It's like a party line. We used 800 trunked for work.

Little bit of CB activity (Channel 7). The more advanced ones whose members are hams use 2 meters, but are pretty discrete on the air. A couple have some milsurp PRC-25 or PRC-77 radios and pick a random frequency on VHF low band... Most of the time it's paintball games and hunters on FRS/GMRS and MURS.

I have the old Mossberg Maxi Combo 500 with buck shot, its old but boy can it put someone down, If that don't work then its off to the M4A3 or the AK-47 Glock-23 for up front and personal or my PPKS. long distance I have that covered to from the K-98 and the list just goes on, from old to new.
