Post subject:  antennas for dummies

so dig it - i have a rs pro2052 scanner - i want to be able to listen to more things - especially military stuff and stuff farther away - like boeing trunked things. i live in marysville in an apartment. i bought an antenna to replace the lame one that came with the unit - its like 4 feet tall and is quite an improvement from the original. however, its flanked on either side by a monitor and then a computer. i know this isn't an ideal reception situation by any means, but is there possibly an extremely localized shielding i could use, or perhaps something i could mount on a sliding glass door? the news of a guy being kidnapped less than 2 blocks away by people looking for nascar jackets doesn't put me at ease about running a line out our sliding glass door...

as always, any help is highly appreciated - also, really interested in local freq's not listed on the intercept northwest site since last update that'd be local - could put up a list of the freq's i've found if anyone has a clue what they could be.

thanks!
