I worked in Alaska with a guy who was telling that once, during the 'cold war' era, he was on Little Diomede island in Alaska, and they had a tradition whereupon they'd take a small boat out about halfway between the islands (a mile or two) and meet some Russian sailors to exchange Levis jeans and stuff for real Russian vodka. Not an officially sanctioned event, obviously, but one they conducted nearly every week. I remember circling into Kotzebue to avoid some sort of weather and realizing that nearly all the land you could see in the distance was Siberia. No vodka though :( |

Here's another map I refer to often: http://www.nwccweb.us/information/firemap.asp#top I watched that Oak Creek Fire take off the other day while out riding on top of Clemans Mtn. Heavy radio traffic on DNR Clemans, State Naches, FS repeaters & tac channels pertaining to this fire as well as a smaller one that took off last Saturday in the Ahtanum Forest, west of Yakima in Tampico. I think it ended up being called the Green Lake Fire. Here in the valley, it's been a multi-alarm fire almost everyday -- brush and structures. Resources are often stretched very thin. One of these days we'll be calling for Benton County or Ellensburg to come down. It's happened before...This year is turning out to be very busy! |

I drove through your area yesterday (up from Maupin, OR fishing :-) and now understand your comments about the ridge and communications systems there..... interesting and challenging terrain. Must be fun listening to the army from time to time as well. |

One fire manager from the Oak Creek fire said on tv, the season is about a month behind. Should be interesting to see how long it stretches out. |

Plus, I don't have digital receiving equipment so that's out...That and I don't have a lot of freqs for them. I used to have Firing Center Fire Dispatch in the 141.XXX range but that has since gone silent and never hear anything. On a side note, they had a 3-alarm brush fire this afternoon. I was, unfortunately, at work... :cry: |
