Post subject:  Scanning Glossary

Started to compile some terms related to scanning.

These are mostly trunking terms.

We all know the usual terms like squelch, LCD, etc.

Any additional terms or corrections would be appreciated.

AMBE: (Advanced Multi-Band Excitation)
A proprietary speech coding standard
developed by Digital Voice Systems, Inc

APCO Project 16 : (a standard describing
the characteristics and capabilities of
public safety trunked radio systems)
such as:
channel access times
automated priority recognition
data systems interface
individuality of system users
command and control flexibility
system growth capability
frequency use
reliability

APCO Project 25: (a suite of standards
for digital radio communications for use
by federal, state/province and local
public safety agencies in North America
to enable them to communicate with
other agencies and mutual aid response
teams in emergencies.0

C4FM: (Continuous 4 level FM modulation)

CAI: (Common Air Interface)

CDMA: (code division multiple access)

Control channels: (a trunked radio system
is packet switching computer network.
Users' radios send data packets to a computer,
operating on a dedicated frequency.

CQPSK: (Compatible quadrature phase shift keying)
A modulation found in newer P25 systems)

CTCSS: (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System)
Also known as PL

DCS: (Digital Coded Squelch)
Also known as DPL

DES: (Data Encryption Standard)
A cipher (a method for encrypting information)
that selected by NBS as an official Federal
Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for
the United States in 1976 and which has
subsequently enjoyed widespread use
internationally. It is based on a Symmetric-key
algorithm that uses a 56-bit key.

DVSI: (Digital Voice Systems, Inc.)

EDACS: (Enhanced Digital Access Communications System)

ESK: (EDACS Security Key)

FDMA: (Frequency Division Multiple Access)

iDEN: (integrated Digital Enhanced Network)

LCN: (Logical Channel Numbers)

LTR: (Logic Trunked Radio)

Motorola Type I: (original Motorola systems that
were based on Fleets and Subfleets)

Motorola Type II: (second generation Motorola
talkgroups and individual radio IDs)

Motorola Type IIi Hybrid: (system has "blocks"
of the system that are Type I Fleets/Subfleets
and Type II talkgroups.)

NAC CODE: (Network Access Code)
In the Project 25 Common Air Interface
definition, the Network Access Code is
analogous to the use of CTCSS and
CDCSS signals in analog radio systems.
It is a code transmitted in the preamble
of the Project 25 signal and repeated
periodically throughout the transmission.
Its purpose is to provide selective access
to and maintain access to a receiver.
It is also used to block nuisance and other
co-channel signals. There are up to
4096 of these NAC codes.

OpenSky: (is a wireless communication system
that applies voice-over-IP transport to radio
communications applications.)

OTAR: (Over-The-Air-Rekeying)

PMR: (Professional Mobile Radio)
also known as Private Mobile Radio
in the UK.

Privacy Plus: (refers to a Type I system.
Privacy Plus systems are normally older
public safety systems and SMRs)

Smartnet: (Motorola Type I and II trunked
systems APCO-16 compliant.)
Up to 28 system channels
Up to 65534 unique radio ids
Up to 4095 talkgroups
They use odd numbered talkgroups

SMR: (Specialized Mobile Radio system)
A conventional two-way radio system,
or trunked radio system, operated by
a service in the 800 or 900 MHz bands.

Talkgroup: (a generic term that refers to
virtual radio channels created by trunked
radio systems.)

TETRA: (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio)
TETRA is endorsed by the European
Radio Communications Committee (ERC)
and mandated for use in Europe.
Europe's equivelant to our APCO P25.

TDMA: (Time division multiple access)
commonly used in the United States to
refer to D-AMPS
