The 1948 movie - "He Walked By Night" is a TRUE story and the BASIS for the later "Dragnet" radio and then TV series. Jack Webb had only a supporting role in the movie, about a Cop Killer that listened to Police radio Calls. However -- the movie was based on the 1946 murder of a CHP officer by Erwin "Machine Gun" Walker. Walker -- was in real life -- a former POLICE DISPATCHER -- in Glendale. He was convicted and sentanced to the gas chamber and later sent to a State Mental Hospital at Vacaville ( The one Charlie Manson is at now ). After a new trial and a pardon -- he was Released in 1973 -- changed his name, worked as a chemist and MARRIED a widow of a CHP officer. ---- Just the facts. MTM
