I'm planning on buying a laptop in the next month and was wondering if anyone has ran into the same problem. All the new laptops don't have serial ports, and with my Pro95 adapter i can't connect to the laptop. I've seen in stores serial to USB converters...mostly used for syncing PDAs and such. I was wondering if anyone has used one of these converters? and if they work well for transfering info to the scanner? and i'm also trying to connect a GPS system to the laptop...anyone know anything about that? take care Ty |

My experience with usb to serial adapters has been good. On my laptop running XP Pro, the comport assigned is com 4. This works with most of my programs with a couple exceptions. I have two different dual band amateur radio's made by Kenwood. These radio's have been in production for several years. The problem is with the Kenwood software, in the setup, the only choice is com 1, or com 2. So it will not work. My newer Kenwood HT software has has a choice up to com 10, thus it works properly. I also have had no luck with dos programs. My GPS works great with two separate programs. So it is more a software issue. Hope that helps. Vince. |

Certain Dells have serial also. I use GSAK as well as EasyGPS on mine. |

Running a Radio Shack USB to Serial Adapter on my Dell Inspiron 1100. Like the other post mentioned, it uses COM4. I've used it with a Garmin eTrex GPS, BC780xlt, Icom R5, etc. So far, no problems. |

You should be able to re-assign the port in the cmos on boot. Just hit del or F2 before it POST's |
