Isn't this the Wi-Max deal? An up and coming take off, or expansion, from Wi-Fi?

Clearwire is a McCaw creation. Remember that was the guy behind Nextel and how much 'problem' he had getting 800 frequencies for his start-up.

Its 2.5ghz, licensed on the old MMDS frequencies. Clearwire chops it into 5mhz wide channels. The middle of the band is still ITFS and can be sublicensed from local colleges/universities.

Many of their customers complain about rate-shaping and port-blocking, not to mention their advertised speeds are very slow and asymmetric. A little slower than DSL and a lot slower than cable.

Not a fact. Its a myth created by telco marketing folks. Proven false in court when BellSouth was sued. A correctly designed system does not have such problems. Then again, I can only speak for the systems I personally designed....

I do know one thing that no matter how good a service is someone is always going to complain.

An ISP which uses poorly designed rate-shaping and port-blocking is not providing a good service, hence a legitimate complaint. Unless you don't mind getting short-changed on what you are paying for. Many of their Mac customers are unhappy because they port-block ICHAT.

Clearwire's RF architecture is good for a basic broadband product. Too bad they got overly cheap on the IP backend. Like many oversubscribed and (poorly) rate-shaped/blocked providers, its penny wise and pound foolish when weighed against the credibility to their customers. I've seen it all too often in this business.

Yep the Chippys are still on low band though I see many of them are using loaded antennas now instead of the huge fender-mounted quarter waves.
