I've traditionally not really been into IM - however, I'm using this now:
http://www.wetnet.net/node/16This particular server is hosted locally by the TCP/IP radio group (WETNET).
Besides having it's own local server, it also has portals to MSN, Yahoo, ICQ - all in one client. They also have a "conference" option - essentially, a closed chat room. I've set up a "NorthwestRadio" chat room there.
Could be cool for a local round-table of info exchange. I've been using it to get real-time assistance with my various Linux growing pains.
Most are just using their call signs for ID's - but you can use whatever.
Lots of capacity - give it a try. For Windows, the program
Exodus and
Psi seem popular, and are FREE. Oh - and the service is also FREE.
